Today while discussing someone's shed I suddenly remembered from my childhood the blue hand drill dad had. It was manual. You held the handle at the top and turned the wheel on the side to drill. Imagine that!!!
Which in turn makes me recall manual hand beaters. We never had one of those but I remember seeing a few of them around.
