Well Russian Ressurection 2011 is here, but sadly Brisbane only gets a handful of the whole line up. Melbourne and Sydney get them all. There's about 2-3 films I really wanted to see from the program. What to do...
Anyway, I've seen Stoker and Lucky Trouble and I really enjoyed both. Lucky Trouble was so pretty to watch. In fact, both were quite fast paced.
Quick synopsis:
Stoker - after the war, a decorated hero is dismissed because concussion has made him a simpleton and can only find a job shovelling coal into the furnaces of a local club. A pair of thugs he used to be in the army with are now hitmen and disposing of their bodies in his furnace. But is he as simple as they think he is? And what happens when the hits become personal? There are a lot of scenes of trudging through the snow and also an earworm soundtrack of incongruous, tragically happy pop music.
Lucky Trouble - stars Milla Jovovich! Slava is a nerd who happens to get run down by a couple in a car. After he graciously argues with the woman that it was his fault so she can be let off by police, she walks out from her fiance and starts a glorious affair with him. They are soon to be married but he has to return to Turkey to tender his resignation from school. However, the headmistress is in love with him, and does him a bad turn when he is mistaken for a soccer coach by the mayor by vouching for him as coach. So now he is stuck there and blackmailed into forming an under 12's team with his passport confiscated. A bookie gets in on the act, blackmailing Slava to throw the match by looking for some losers. Slava enlists some street kids as his team... but as they soon discover, these kids are naturals, and the more matches they win, the more lies Slava has to invent for his waiting bride. Will he ever get married?
